Not sure what you've got? Any laptop's web browser always works. Or send Ryan a photo of the remote and he'll tell you.

Samsung TV

app: Jellyfin · Samsung Apps

Jellyfin finally landed in the Samsung app store in 2026, after years of Samsung owners feeling left out. Newer tellies (roughly 2021 onwards) get it first.

  1. Press the Home button on the remote and go to Apps.
  2. Pick the magnifying glass, search for Jellyfin, and install it.
  3. Open it. When it asks for a server, type jellyfin.mazon.is and connect.
  4. Pick your name (or choose Manual login) and type your password.
  5. Done. Grab a snack.
tip

Can't find it in the store? Older Samsungs and some regions are still waiting. The easy fix is a Chromecast with Google TV or a Fire TV stick in a spare HDMI port (about $60–$100), then follow those steps instead.

Typing passwords with a TV remote is misery. See Quick Connect in the FAQ to sign in from your phone.

LG TV

app: Jellyfin · LG Content Store

LG has had a proper Jellyfin app for ages. Works a treat.

  1. Press the Home button (the little house) and open the LG Content Store. On newer tellies it's just called Apps.
  2. Search for Jellyfin and install it.
  3. Open it and type the server: jellyfin.mazon.is
  4. Pick your name and type your password.
tip

The magic-remote pointer makes typing much easier. Wave it at the keyboard on screen rather than using the arrow keys. Or use Quick Connect from your phone.

Google TV & Android TV

app: Jellyfin for Android TV · Google Play

That covers the Chromecast that comes with a remote, the Google TV Streamer, Nvidia Shield, and most Sony, TCL, Hisense and Philips smart tellies.

  1. From the home screen, go to Apps (or hold the mic button and say “Jellyfin”).
  2. Search for Jellyfin and install Jellyfin for Android TV.
  3. Open it, choose to add a server, and type jellyfin.mazon.is
  4. Sign in with your username and password.
tip

Make sure it's the one called Jellyfin for Android TV, not some lookalike with ads. It's free and there's no catch.

Amazon Fire TV

app: Jellyfin · Amazon Appstore
  1. On the home screen, go to Find (the magnifying glass) and choose Search.
  2. Type Jellyfin and pick the orange-and-purple Jellyfin app. Press Get or Download.
  3. Open it and type the server: jellyfin.mazon.is
  4. Sign in with your username and password.
tip

The Alexa remote can do the searching for you: hold the blue button and say “Jellyfin”.

Apple TV

app: Swiftfin (free) · or Infuse

There's no app called “Jellyfin” on Apple TV. You want Swiftfin, which is the official Jellyfin app for Apple gear with a different name.

  1. Open the App Store on the Apple TV, search for Swiftfin and press Get.
  2. Open Swiftfin and choose Connect to server.
  3. Type jellyfin.mazon.is and connect.
  4. Pick your name and sign in. Quick Connect saves you typing with that fiddly remote.

Infuse is a very polished player that also works. In Infuse, choose to add files, pick Jellyfin from the list, then use the same address and login. The free version is fine for most things. A few fancier video formats want Infuse Pro, which costs money, so try Swiftfin first.

  1. Press Home, scroll down to Search (or Streaming Channels).
  2. Search for Jellyfin, pick it and choose Add channel.
  3. Open it and type the server: jellyfin.mazon.is
  4. Sign in with your username and password.
tip

The store might say it needs a cable or satellite subscription. Ignore that, it's just Roku being weird. Jellyfin is free and needs nothing else.

  1. Press the Xbox button and open the Store.
  2. Search for Jellyfin and install it.
  3. Open it and type the server: jellyfin.mazon.is
  4. Sign in with your username and password.

iPhone & iPad

app: Swiftfin or Jellyfin Mobile

Two free official apps. Swiftfin feels more like a proper iPhone app. Jellyfin Mobile looks just like the website. Either is fine.

  1. Open the App Store and search for Swiftfin (or Jellyfin Mobile). Tap Get.
  2. Open it and tap Connect to server.
  3. Type jellyfin.mazon.is and connect.
  4. Sign in with your username and password.
tip

Once your phone is signed in, it becomes your remote for signing in everywhere else. See Quick Connect.

  1. Open the Play Store, search for Jellyfin and install the official one (purple-and-blue triangle, made by Jellyfin).
  2. Open it and type the server: jellyfin.mazon.is
  3. Sign in with your username and password.
tip

Watching on mobile data? Drop the quality (see buffering) or a movie will chew through a few gigs.

Computer

The simplest of the lot. Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox all work, on a Mac or a PC.

  1. Go to jellyfin.mazon.is
  2. Pick your name, type your password, and tick Remember me.
  3. Bookmark it. That's it.
tip

Laptop plugged into the telly with an HDMI cable? That works perfectly too, and it's a good fallback when all else fails.

Phone → telly

Chromecast · AirPlay

Got an older Chromecast with no remote, or just want to fling something from your phone? Easy.

  1. Chromecast: use the Jellyfin app on an Android phone, or Jellyfin in the Chrome browser on a laptop. Make sure you're on the same Wi-Fi as the telly.
  2. Tap the cast icon (a little TV with Wi-Fi waves) at the top and pick your TV.
  3. Choose something and hit play. It plays on the telly and your phone becomes the remote.
  4. Apple TV / AirPlay: from Swiftfin or Jellyfin Mobile on an iPhone, start playing, then tap the AirPlay icon (a triangle under a screen) and pick the Apple TV.
tip

Casting from an iPhone to a Chromecast is hit and miss. If you have a Google TV or Apple TV with a remote, putting the app on it directly is always smoother.

Can't find it? Ask.

There's a request page. You pick the movie or show and it turns up in Ryanflix all on its own. No need to text Ryan, no need to feel bad about it.

  1. On your phone or computer, go to request.mazon.is
  2. Tap Sign in with Jellyfin and use your usual Ryanflix username and password.
  3. Search for the movie or show and tap its poster.
  4. Tap Request. For a TV show, pick which seasons you want (or all of them).
  5. Walk away. When it's ready it just appears in Ryanflix. Most things are there within a few hours.

Brand-new cinema releases usually aren't gettable until they come out on streaming or disc. Really old or obscure stuff can take a while, or might not turn up at all. If it's been a few days, text Ryan.

Live TV, too.

Ryanflix also has the free-to-air Freeview channels, with a proper TV guide. That includes Sky Open, which has the Friday night NRL and every Warriors game.

In any Jellyfin app, look for Live TV on the home screen or in the menu, then Guide. Pick a channel and it starts playing.

Live channels take a few seconds longer to start than movies. Give it a moment before you start pressing buttons.

Help, it's…

…buffering. Or stuttering. Or the spinny wheel won't stop.

It's a home server in Auckland, not Netflix, so sometimes it needs a hand. While the video is playing, open the settings (usually a cog, or the ⋯ button) and find Quality. Pick something lower, like 720p or 4 Mbps. It'll look nearly as good and play much smoother.

Still stuck? Try another movie. If everything is slow, the internet at either end might be having a moment. Check the status page.

…got no subtitles (or I want them off).

While it's playing, look for the speech-bubble or CC button and pick a language, or Off. On a TV, press OK or down on the remote to bring the buttons up.

No English subtitles in the list? Text Ryan the name of the movie and he can usually sort it.

…asking for a password I've forgotten.

Happens to everyone. Text Ryan and he'll reset it. There's no “forgot password” button on purpose.

…a nightmare typing a password on the TV remote.

Use Quick Connect, which lets your phone do the signing in for you.

  • On the TV app's sign-in screen, choose Quick Connect. It shows a short code.
  • On your phone (already signed in to Ryanflix, in the app or at jellyfin.mazon.is), tap your profile picture and go to Quick Connect.
  • Type the code from the telly and press Authorise. The TV signs straight in.
…down. Is it just me?

Have a look at status.mazon.is. It shows whether Ryanflix and the request page are up right now.

If it says everything's down, Ryan already knows (and is probably already swearing at it). Power cuts and updates happen, and it's usually back within the hour. If the status page says it's up but it's not working for you, restart the app and then text Ryan.

…okay if I share my login with my flatmate / cousin / the whole netball team?

Please don't. It's one little server in a house in Auckland, and every extra stream slows it down for everyone. If someone would like their own account, ask Ryan. He's usually happy to set one up for friends and whānau.

…asking which server I want, or showing a list of names.

The server is called Ryanflix. If the app shows a list of user names, tap yours. If yours isn't there, choose Manual login and type it in. The username isn't case-sensitive, but the password is.

…not on my device list up there.

If your device has a web browser, jellyfin.mazon.is will probably work in it. Failing that, a Chromecast with Google TV or a Fire TV stick in the back of the telly costs less than a takeaway night for the family, and works a treat.
